Passed along...

Family heirlooms can be a touchy subject.

Something that has "been in the family" is considered sacred & untouchable.

Unfortunately, as someone who has a specific "taste", family hand-me-downs don't always "fit in". Which usually lead to the following thoughts: What if I don't like it? Where can I put it so that it will go un-noticed without being hidden? (I'm a horrible person)

But then, every once in a while...a GREAT one comes along. A pleasure and not an obligation. These are great moments.

Yesterday, as my mother-in-law rushed off into the basement to gather up something she had been "saving" for me, I couldn't help but nervously hold my breath...and when she emerged, what she held in her hands took my breath away...

~A quilt.
~A children's quilt.
~A children's quilt that her mother had made.
~A children's quilt that her mother had made for her when she was six.
~A children's quilt that her mother had made for her when she was six and had since been used (sparingly) by a number of her own 9 children.
~A children's quilt that her mother had made for her when she was six and had since been used (sparingly) by a number of her own 9 children, and was now MINE! (well...technically for the baby, but, you know)

Every handmade detail...from the inspiring use of fabrics to the images copied from vintage coloring book pages...Love at first sight! A GREAT moment.

The "baby" is 16 months old. How long do I have to wait before I can get him in a big-boy bed with his new big-boy quilt?
It needs to be mentioned that despite my nervousness, to date, I have only rcv'd heirlooms that I love. And yes, a huge part of the LOVE is the family attachment.
Share with us some of your beloved family heirlooms. Comment at the end of this post.
***Made by his Nonni! Making it even better than if we had found it on some random shelf in some random store. I guess heirlooms are pretty cool!***
